Humble Indie Bundle does it again, this time with Shank, Super Meat Boy, Bit.Trip Runner, Nightsky and Jamestown — all for WHATEVER YOU WANT!
Every game is DRM-free, cross-platform on PC, Mac and Linux, and a portion of the proceeds goes to Child’s Play Charity and the American Red Cross. And if you pay above the average, you get two additional games: Gratuitous Space Battles, and Cave Story+!
That’s a crazy damn good bundle. So what are you waiting for? Go buy Humble Indie Bundle 4 and enjoy your 7 awesome indie games!
Update: thanks for all the comments below! We are currently tracking a number of issues and Ryan is looking into them. I’ve been in constant contact with him and will continue to post details as we hear them. Thanks for all your patience as we iron out the details for our ports to the new platforms!

i bought the bundle just for shank, but the game unfortunately crashes at startup and gives me a segment fault error. I am using linux, and am a bit dissapointed that the linux port was screwed. However, I still got the codes, so I can redeem it on steam. Thanks for participating in the bundle!
Are you able to give us a bit more info on the crash and your system specs? No promises, but I can certainly pass on the info to the contractor who did the port.
Thanks for supporting the bundle!
Shank crashes with “segmentation fault” notice on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 64 bit.
Just to follow up on some Linux crash reports here…
- There’s a bug in the Shank build that’s currently on humblebundle.com, which will cause some of you to fail at startup. We will be updating the official installation soon, but we have a hotfix here in the meantime:
http://bit.ly/zW2IGd
…you should use that build in any case, as it has performance fixes, too.
- You absolutely need drivers that support GL_ARB_map_buffer_range (or a really really fast GPU) or the first boss battle will be painfully slow.
- Make sure you have good 32-bit OpenGL drivers…many 64-bit systems do not (and “glxinfo” isn’t helpful; it’s 64-bit, so it shows your perfectly working 64-bit drivers, not your broken 32-bit drivers).
- If the game refuses to start, you can try deleting the libstc++.so.6 we ship with the game. This is a messy part of Linux at the moment; we don’t have a good solution to this yet except to delete this on some systems.
One or several of these things will fix the segfaults on startup.

Will the Mac port be on Steam anytime soon?
Not yet — we barely got the Mac build out for the bundle so we haven’t had a chance to figure out a Mac Steam option.
Right now we’re concentrating on finishing Shank 2, but it’s definitely on the list.
Fantastic Linux port! We captured the critter for L.G.C. running on Ubuntu 11.04.
Keep up the solid work.
Cheers,
Venn Stone
Bought Indie bundle 4 just for shank. I wanted to get it earlier but there was DRM in it. It was a deal breaker for me. I won’t touch a game with DRM.
I really appreciate you participating in the Humble Indie Bundle. That is the right way to go!
Hey, you guys got any news on the cd-key problem steam is having?
Always when i try to start the game it just gives the “Failed to contact key server” error.
me too
me 2
Yeah, man. I’m getting the same error.
Annoying shit. :l
Hey guys — I’ve contacted Steam and Humble Bundle and we’re looking into this right away. I’ll post here once I find out more information!
It’s good now.
I’m hearing that the issue is resolved… is it guys?
Hi! It’s great that shank is on indie bumble, just bought it! Unfortunately, it’s hardly playable on MAC. Everything is ok until the fight with the butcher when it starts lagging at something like 2-3ps, even in the lowest resolution. Process is using no more than 17-18% of my cpu after short demo before the fight.
Macbook Pro 4.1
2.5 ghz core 2 duo
4gb ddram
8600gt 512mb
ssd with a plenty of free space
Lion 10.7.2
I saw this issue with another user, so you’re definitely not the only one. I’ve passed the info on to our contractor who did the port, and he’s looking into it.
FYI, it appears this is the worst bit in the whole game for the Mac version — if you manage to beat him in the low FPS, it should smooth out. Again, we are looking into it and I’ll post again when I have more info. Thanks for contacting us!
I’m having same issue, get to butcher fight and goes to unplayable FPS, stopping me even trying to play the gane through and I was really looking forward to it, please try fix soon !
Same problem here, but it starts when the firsts guys appear. :/ Any solutions?
Same here. But I’m on linux ( fedora 15 ).
Hi I just bought the game with the HIB and have problems with the Linux Port. Everything runs smooth until the fight starts. Then the area where the fight is supposed to be, becomes black. Fighting still works. I can see my health bar and those of my opponents. And I can press fighting buttons and hear the smashing sounds and see the healthbars of my opponents going down ;). I just can’t see what is going on. because everything is black.
I’m using Intel HD 3000 onboard graphics.
What can i do? I really want to play and see what is going on…
Have you tried going into the settings and turning off blur and bloom? Otherwise I’m not sure what changes during a fight that could cause a black screen
Yes I tried this settings, but unfortunatly it didn’t change anything. That’s so strange.
I found that people had similar issues before, but they obviously couldn’t find a solution.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1541159.html
Another person here, same problem Intel HD 2000 graphics card.
From Ryan Gordon, our Linux porter:
“It sounds like the drivers have buggy GL_EXT_framebuffer_object or GL_EXT_framebuffer_blit support.
We use one for render targets (to simulate a Direct3D backbuffer that’s a different size than the game window), and the other to implement a fast StretchBlit between them.
Failing that: it might just be buggy drivers, period. I don’t think there is much I can do here in any of these cases. At this point, I just offer to make myself available to the driver developers for any questions they have about the ways we use OpenGL.”
I know that doesn’t help much, but it seems it’s a hardware issue. BTW, we’ve had a long history of buggy Intel drivers — back in 2005 we had to buy a cheapo Intel machine JUST to find a workaround against a driver bug they had.
Thank you for your answer. For me it’s a bit sad of course, but I’m glad to know where the problem is. If i have some spare time, i can try to file a bug report. So thank you very much.
I was really impressed when i saw Shank in the bundle, which was the main reason for me to buy it :)
But not everything is ok since i’m having some problems with the game :[
The problem is that i can’t configure my Xbox360 Controller correctly, it messes up the “number” every button is associated by default, as an example the button nº1 that normally would be the A button, is associated to the d-pad Up.This make’s it impossible to configure the buttons correctly.
This only hapens in Shank and i’ve tried the gamepad in other games and everything worked normally.
Some help would be really great! :)
I’ve passed this info on, and we’re looking into it!
When we ported the game, I couldn’t actually find a good 360 driver, so I used a PS3 one. However, we’re looking into it and hopefully we can figure out a solution.
I have the same xbox 360 controller buttons mapping problem in Mac Lion.
Do you have a recommended driver for the xbox 360 controllers that you used for development? Maybe that’s the problem.
Thanks.
I’m on Mac OSX Lion btw.
the cd-key issue is fixed!
thanks!
the game is awesome!
COOL!!!!!!!!:O
I also bought the Humble Bundle for Shank and am running Linux (Fedora 16) with the following specs:
2.5 Ghz Core 2 Quad
6 GB Ram
Radeon 4850 using the gallium 0.4 drivers
When I run Shank, it fails to start at all, and reports missing GL extensions in the following error:
ERROR: Missing required OpenGL extensions:
– GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object
– GL_EXT_framebuffer_blit
– GL_ARB_shader_objects
– GL_ARB_vertex_shader
– GL_ARB_fragment_shader
– GL_ARB_shading_language_100
but running glxinfo shows that those extensions are supported.
Hey Tony — your specs have been forwarded on, and Ryan is actively looking at it. Thanks for your patience!
Good to know. Please let me know if any more information is required.
I have the same problem.
this is my system requirements
aptosid (debian sid)
intel quad core 2.5ghz
8 gb ram
open source driver for ati 6570
Same problem
HW: AMD Radeon HD 6310
Soft: xf86-video-ati-6.14.3 + mesa-7.11.2 (gallium) + kernel 3.0.4
I temporary fix these errors (that came with opensource ati driver, i.e.: radeon) simply moving away libSDL-1.2.so.0, libgcc_s.so.1 and libstdc++.so.6 from “bin” directory. In this way the game uses the ones compiled in my system and it works fine.
k.
If you’re using 64-bit, you need to install the 32-bit DRI package for your video card. (e.g. lib32-intel-dri for me in Archlinux)
Hi, i have the same problem (hunder arch). Installing the lib32-intel-dri got the game not to crash but now i can only see a few titles. Any idea how you got it working?
I have Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and I installed the Humble Bundle .bin version without any problem. The graphics are fine, the opening scene displays nicely. However, when the game actually starts the character drifts to the left and it’s impossible to make him travel right. The jump/weapons work fine but it’s unplayable unless I can move right.
I also tried installing the new .deb version that was uploaded yesterday (shank_20111207_amd64.deb), the downloaded file shows as 2.2Gb in nautilus, but when I try to install it the Software Centre reports “Internal Error”.. the file could not be opened.
D’oh! We’ve been noticing some users have this issue on Mac, too, and Ryan is looking at it.
I’ll report once we have more info. Thanks!
The same problem on my 64b Arch.
And +1 for Desura keys.
Desura keys would rock! It’s the best way to launch games on Linux since everything is setup to install consistently. Thanks!
i have had the exact same problem, also using ubuntu 11.10 64bit :(
I’m having the same problem here
Mandriva 2011.0 64bits
Hi there!
Thank you for the game you made! I can’t wait to buy a humble bundle, but one thing stops me: no Desura keys…
Please, could you add Shank to Desura and provide keys for Humble Bundle? There are a lot of Desura users who want to see your game there!
Best wishes, David.
Desura has been mentioned a few times now — I will keep pushing for us to get on there.
Awesome, I’ll double my HIB contribution if we get Desura keys in time!
+1 for Shank to get pushed on Desura, at least we won’t have to redownload 2.1GB worth just to get the latest Linux binaries on HIB. I’ll double my contribution too!
Shank is totally worth its asking price, if not more!
Hi,
i also buy humble bundle only because of Shank, but i have a problem with installing linux version.
I cant install neither bin version (./shank-linux-120720110-1-bin: No such file or directory) or 64bit deb (package might be corrupted or ypu are not allowed to open the file. Check the permissions of the file).
well, permissions are ok, even tried running install with sudo…same thing (downloaded few times … always same)
my spec:
Linux Mint 12 (ubuntu 11.10)
8GB RAM
Nvidia GTS 250
Nvidia driver 280.13
>./shank-linux-120720110-1-bin: No such file or directory
Try ‘chmod +x ./shank-linux-120720110-1-bin’
Devs, please, add Desura support! It would resolve much of problems with Linux (Windows and Mac too), like library dependencies, installation errors or game updates.
+1 to David!
well chmod was 1st thing after download :), but thank you for trying
Really enjoying it so far, Shank 2 is coming to Steam, right?
Yep, Shank 2 is coming on Steam!
I’m Happy that you actually made a mac port but the first level is unbeatable because of the FPS. I know that when you beat the first level the FPS goes to 60 but the boss lag the game so much it took me 5min to swing my chainsaw. If you could try to fix it or be able to skip the first level.
How do I change the graphics resolution in the linux version of the game (got from humble bundle) as my gfx card is crap and it defaults to 1080p. Option to change resolution is greyed out in menu’s. Downloaded shank-linux-120720110-bin file and my sys specs are if they help:
cpu = Intel Core2Duo E6750
ram = 4068 ddr2 800
GFX = 512meg 9400 gt
OS = Ubuntu 11.10
I got
I got a problem with linux (Mint 10)
I can’t install the 64 or 32bit version.
It says the files are corrupted..
What can I do?
I already make chmod, sudo…
first make sure that you have downloaded to where u have read/write access to then do the chmod thing. if it still says it is corrupt, then you may need to re-download but this time use the bit torrent option that way the chances of your download being corrupt is reduced very heavily
well the thing is I got them with torrent.. now it’s downloading the bin file… I don’t know how to use it, but I will try
I just get the bin file, and now I can install it!
I would like to add that i also have the deb corrupted problem, after downloading from torrent. I checked the md5sum and it is correct. Guess I’ll try the bin tomorrow.
Ditto about the corruption/file incomplete. Bin and deb both fail.
ubuntu 11.10 64 nvidia gts450 phenom ii
Looks like it has to be done this way:
cd to the directory and then
sudo dpkg -i –force-all shank_20111207_amd64.deb
I still don’t know what’s up with the bin file.
Thanks! Finally able to play it.
Thanks, man. I did “sudo dpkg -i shank_20111207_amd64.deb” without the “-force-all”, and it worked.
I probably will forget this the next time I install Shank again if ever.
I installed 32-bit version to my Ubuntu 11.10 of Shank from Humble Bundle 4 and when I try to run it, only message I get is a segfault.
Some additional information from lspci about my Thinkpad T60 hardware:

user@machine:~/shank/bin$ ./Shank
Segmentation fault
Well that’s a bit disappointing.
Is a Shank 2 Linux port planned ?
(I’m looking forward to play Shank 1, past the first boss, who is killing my fps before killing our warrior, this seems to be a Linux bug as well as OS X)
I love Shank 1. This game is the best game I have ever played. I am wondering if Shank 2 will be available for Linux when released.
Hey, i downloaded the humble bundle onto my 13 inch base model 2011 macbook pro, and shank is not playing smoothly. There is a lot of input lag and really bad screen tearing is it because my model is not up to scratch?
Oh, and im using snow leopard. The opening cinematic looks great but then the low fps kicks in
I also bought the Humble Bundle for Shank and am running Linux DEBIAN 6 with the following specs:
1,7 Ghz Intel Dual Core
2 GB Ram
Intel Media Graphics 945
When I run Shank, it fails to start at all, and reports missing GL extensions in the following error:
ERROR: Missing required OpenGL extensions:
– GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object
– GL_EXT_framebuffer_blit
– GL_ARB_shader_objects
– GL_ARB_vertex_shader
– GL_ARB_fragment_shader
– GL_ARB_shading_language_100
but running glxinfo shows that those extensions are supported
I think specifically we’re having some trouble with Intel945. I’ll follow up with Ryan to see if that’s a bug, or simply that Shank on Linux cannot support this graphics card.
Segmentation fault here too :-(
Tried both 64,32 and bin versions.
I tried to install with -force-all too.
I’m running Ubuntu 11.04
on a Thinkpad x220 with
Intel® HD Graphics 3000.
Please help.
In the post above I’m talking about Shank.
Night Sky, Braid and SuperMeatBoy are running fine.
Shank segfaults. I’m using Debian unstable with debumblebee (intel driver doesn’t privides needed GL extensions). Shank is one of games for I purchased the HumbleBundle, I’d like to play with it…
fcvghvchgcjcgcjcjcgj
On Dec 16th I reported a problem with the character drifting in Ubuntu 11.10 x64. I’ve since purchased a game controller which works fine, so the drifting problem is keyboard-related if that helps.
Intel Mobile Intel® GM45 Express
ubuntu 10.04.3 lts
Shank crashes with seg fault. Is there any work around or fix?
So I just found the magic of the humble indie bundle today and the sale is over. Do you guys have any other way to distribute Shank for linux? It is the only OS I use and have heard a lot of great stuff about the game and want to give it a go.
Where i can buy Shank 1 for Linux(Ubuntu) it is to much to release it on the Ubuntu Software Store(Please also for Germans because im a German 16 Years Old Teenager) back to the Topic: with a Linux release you could get more money(watch at the static of Humble Bundle Linux User pay more then all the other) please i would buy it for any price because it is a verry good game.
Hello i don’t know if this a right place to put this.
but i have bought the game through steam, and i experience two problems.
first one is directx components needed for the game fails to install, it stops working canceling the process. yet the game launches without any error. but every time i try to launch the game i have to wait directx to be failed again and again for game to be started.
second one is, the mouse is not accurate in the game, i have hard time to press menu buttons, the problem also affects the gameplay. “actual mouse” seems to point different position than the indicator
i tried a solution in which you check “don’t scale in high DPI” thingy in compatibility section. no use.
thanks for reading
can’t seem to find shank 2 on psn!!
Thanks so much for the Mac port! I will get the sequel at some point thanks to the inclusion of it in the Humble Bundle.
