Every since Mark of the Ninja was released, we’ve had numerous requests for more. The trouble is, we very intentionally built Ninja to be a complete experience, both in terms of its mechanics and narrative.
But you all kept sending us messages. Then we considered what a “Criterion Collection” version of the game might be like. And with that in mind, we’ve been putting together Mark of the Ninja Special Edition. Here’s what you can look forward to in the Special Edition:
- A new level, set in a flashback to the early life of Dosan (the enlightened tattoo artist) that will set the stage for the events that transpire in Mark of the Ninja.
- A new style of play, which includes a nonlethal takedown ability, and provides a hybrid of lethal and nonlethal approaches to the game.
- Two new items, one more geared to stealth and concealment and one a bit more direct. Both the items and the new play style will be available in the main game as well as the new level. (more details at a later date).
- Finally, we’ve added a ton of developer commentary to the main game. All the original levels will feature a number of commentary nodes that discuss various aspects of the game’s creation, anecdotes, at least two history lessons and other behind the scenes info from nearly everyone on the team.
- Developer commentary has been fully localized for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese. (Additional details below.)
For anyone who has already played Mark of the Ninja, we’re hoping the Special Edition will give them a reason to revisit the game with both new challenges and insights, much like you’d watch the director’s commentary of one of your favourite movies.
The Special Edition will be available as DLC on Xbox Live Arcade and Steam. It will be released this summer (price still TBD).
Additionally, the Special Edition will be playable in part at PAX East this upcoming weekend at booth #774. If you’re going to be in Boston, we’d love to chat with you and have you check out the game (along with Don’t Starve, of course)!

I’m pretty sure it’ll be available in France this time around… but I’ll double check. We aren’t localized, though.
Any plans for Mac version anytime?
No concrete plans for Mac yet, unfortunately. On a related note, online multiplayer actually throws a big wrench into ports!

Has it CO-OP offline play, like Shank 1? If yes, can’t wait to buy!
The 2-player Survival Mode is both online and offline — to be clear, we don’t have a co-op campaign this time around, but the survival mode is seriously fun.

What kind of DRM will Shank 2 be using? Gamersgate just says “other.”
At least on Steam, there is no DRM (besides the Steam wrapper). Pretty sure this is also the case on Origin, but we didn’t do the final package, so I can’t be 100% on that.
Oh well, guess I’ll wait until the Shank 2 Humble Bundle.
Serial Keys I can handle, but any DRM beyond that is unacceptable to me. I’ve been burned too many times.
I assume you’re already heard the standard arguments why DRM only hurts paying customers, pirates get the better product, etc.
Do your steam or Origin contracts preclude you from selling DRM-free downloads direct from your site using paypal or BMTMicro or whatever?
Are you against buying games on Steam? Because as I say, we don’t do any DRM… we just put the game on Steam!
Yep. It’s weird to me how people don’t consider Steam to be DRM. You’ve got to verify your install online, you have to run your game through a frontend, sounds like particularly intrusive DRM to me. I guess Starforce lowered the bar so much that people are happy with a DRM that doesn’t break your computer.
All kinds of indies sell direct in addition to being on steam, and they encourage customers to buy direct because the developer pockets more money per sale without a middleman. Why didn’t you choose the direct sale option?
